MOMENTOS in Long Beach School for Adults

Friends
If a kiss was a raindrop
I'd send you a shower
If a hug was a second
I'd send you hours
If smiles were water
I'd send you a sea
If friendship was a person
I'd send you me

What I learned from the ESL Class of the School for Adults in Long Beach

Student: Yoon Choi
Teacher: Ron Fujihara
School: The School for Adults in Long Beach

I have been living in America for about 20 months and attending the School for Adults in Long Beach for over one year. When I think about this school, I am surprised with the level of concern and the efforts of America for foreigners. I appreciate this fantastic educational system and all the ESL class teachers who really enjoy their work as a educator. The teachers not only teach their students how to speak and write English, but also help their students' adaptation to America with thoughtful consideration. They  encourage their students to meet new challeges. The teachers' strong senses of responsibility are my first favorable impressions about America.

I have learned English skills by the systematic teaching methods used by the teachers of this school. The teachers always teach us step by step with various educational materials in diversified ways, so we can easily follow their instructions. After that, we can feel achievement and also get self-confidence.

While I have been studying in this school, I have taken a few classes. Above all, I liked the online class by using the teacher's own web site. I improved my power of thinking in English through completing assignments, and I could be free from fear of English and shyness through the presentation in front of many classmates. Besides, I learned many kinds of computer skills while I submitting the assignments that I did online. Whart a win-win situation!

I also loved participating in the conversation class. All students including me talked to each other about the daily topic presented by the teacher. Our tension melted away and we found our friendship got stronger after we talked to each other in poor English. Moreover, the opportunity to learn different culture from each other was just the icing on the cake. These were greatly exciting experiences for me.

At the beginning of my life in America, I had a hard time trying to make myself understood because of my lack of English. Now I have improved in English skills tremendously. I came to understand Americans' words and can express my thought in English. I want to thank all of my teachers' hard work in this school with my heart. I respect their passion to teach their students and their educational viewpoint. They are real spokespersons of the generous educational system and immigration policy of America.

Attending the school for adults is the best choice to learn English and understand different culture. There is no choice but to adjust ourselves to this country because we already chose this country as our second homelands. When I use acquired English skills in real situations, such as , writng resumes or business letters, reading the policies about automobile or medical insurance, going shopping, and ordering food at restaurant, I can throw away my anxiety about mistakes into the trash can. I am not a coward or escapist in America any more.

By the time I finish ESL class, I am sure I will be one of  self-sufficient, responsible community members. I won't be an outsider in community where I belong any more. I will try my best to get a good job and play an important role. When I stand grandly in the center of the American society as a Korean-American, I'll become an ESL class teacher and help my students to take roots in America just as my teachers have done for me. LOOKING BACK ON RON'S CLASS

Mr. Ron's Class

I cannot say anything about my very early days in th U.S. after immigration without Long Beach School for Adults. At that time, I was having a very hard time due to homesickness, stress from English and anxiety about the future, especially my children's trouble adapting to school. In the meantime, Long Beach School for Adults was the only consolation for me.

The Front View of Long Beach School for Adults

Learning and improving English skill, associating with many friends from diverse countries, sharing different culture with students... All those things were tremendous experiences to me. Even though Long Beach Adult School was not a regular university which I always dreamed of attending, it gave me a big pleasure and peace. While I was in there, I could keep my minds off everything that made my life hard and take a breath. What was quite remarkable was "International Gossip Club" and Web Site of it that I made with some friends. The communication with clubmembers online was exciting.

All of teachers that I've ever met in there were thoughtful, caring, kind and enthusiastic about teaching to foreigners. Mrs. Linda Whitmer, Mrs. Joyce Inch, and  Mr. Ron Fujihara used to be my teachers that I never forget the rest of my life. They were always ready with lots of help when I was in need. They encouraged me whenever I was frustrated.  Knowing that there was concerns about me gave me energy.

I particularly remember Mr. Ron Fujihara, the teacher when I was in his online class. He was a person like "Morrie" from "Tuesdays with Morrie" by American writer Mitch Albom. He was not only an ESL teacher but also a good life mentor. Whenever I held out my hand for help both mentally and academically, he was pleased to take it.

He was a technology expert. He had an extensive knowledge of high technology. His teaching style through Internet was interesting for me. Sometimes I stayed up all nights doing his assignment. I really enjoyed his class. As a result, I accomplished an outstanding technological achievement. Moreover, I could get my confidence back little by little and all of my family were adapting ourselves to the environmental change day by day.

The Article about Mr. Ron
in Long Beach Unified School District Newspaper

Come to think of it, I feel extremely sorry for my husband all over again. He is as hardworking and responsible for his family as ever. Nevertheless, I was eager to work on the computer: The more I missed my family and friends in Korea, the longer I used to sit in front of the computer with no talking with him. Even now I ought to apologize to him for not doing enough as his wife.

Almost 13 years have passed since I immigrated to this country. My country with my family and friends is now just a distant memory. When I am passing by Long beach Adult School, I still see many Non-American people, who want to learn American culture and language. They look busy as a beehive. That's just a scene which fear and dream and excitement etc, they all co-exist togather. That scene will be always  the same as long as American-dreamers will not disappear. (2014)

THE EPISODE OF CHILDHOOD - Creative Story(Based on a Picture)

It was early spring.
We, naughty boys were late for school in that morning. When we entered through the school gate, all of us were panting and out of breath after running. Mr.Lucas, who seemed to have been waiting for us by the gate, beckoned his hand to us to come nearer. Then he let us stand leaning against the wall without a word.
“It’s not fair! We really are a bit later.”
I said to myself. But I noticed in a moment that Mr. Lucas' impassive face looked different than normal, so I could not help keeping my mouth shut and shrugging my shoulders.

Actually, we found a frog in the roadside grass on our way to school. We were glad to meet the frog and caught it barely. We looked over it with curiosity for a while. When we saw what time it was, we were late for school already. We began to come around realized what we had done. We ran and ran as fast as we could.

When we were leaning against the wall, we heard some noisy from the classroom through the open door. Just at that moment, Allen standing with his hands in the pockets dropped something on the floor.
     “What’s that? ”
Oh, my goodness! That was the frog, which we caught a little while ago. The frog was sat still in front of us. I was about to laugh then, but I bore and forbore with it.

Mr. Lucas was staring down the frog for a while. At last he broke his silence and told us.
“Today is my last day in this school. I have to transfer to another school in the country tomorrow. Thank you for the days in this school. Please don’t be late for the class from now on.”

All of a sudden Derek folding his arms began to sob. I felt like crying, too. Mr. Lucas stroked our heads in turn. He picked up his big bag that was laid on the floor and went away without hesitation.

That day taught me how painful the parting was.  (2002)

FAMILY NEWSPAPER, THE TREASURE OF MY FAMILY

The family news paper "Hahnnaeum Hahnkajok (한마음 한가족)" is the treaure and history of my family. It might seem to be small and unimportant to others, but it is the precious item that you cannot put a price on to my family. It's the greatest assets of my family. Its title "Hahnnaeum Hahnkajok (한마음 한가족)" in Korean means  "My family with the one mind and same goals for happiness." All about my family, that is, our history and our spiritual maturity are included in it.

I began to make family newspaper in1996 when my son was in 1st grade of elementary school in Korea. Actually it was my son's assignment during summer vacation. We were togather and we enjoyed making it. The publisher was Father, my husband, and the editor was Mother, me. Both of my children were the reporters. While doing it, we felt deep understanding and great love between us. The relationship among the family became stronger and stronger. It was made twice every year until we decided to immigrate to the U.S. my son was in 5th grade.

When I came to the U.S., I brought those newspapers which had been made until then even if I left most of householders in my country. I also brought my children's journals which had been collected since they began to write it.

Unfortunatelymy family couldn't keep on making family newspaper since we came to the U.S. because we must first of all get accustomed to the different culture and life style from ours. As soon as my family settle down in this country well, in other words we can live without any trouble, I will make it again in English version. The more we make it, the better and stronger our English abilities and power of thinking become.

I want to give family newspaper to my children when they are grown up and have their own families. I hope my children will make it with their children even without their parents. It will be made and kept by my descendents forever and ever. It will be continued from generation to generation. That's my dream. (2002)

FOUR DAYS' LOVE - Book Report "The Bridges of Madison County"

The book I read recently is "the Bridges of Madison County" by Robert James Waller, an American. Actually I had read the Korean version of same book aboout 8 years ago. Although this book contains just 171 pages, I spent a little bit long time reading because of my lack of English.

This painful and beautiful love story of Robert Kincaid and Francesca Johnson left me in tears. It shows us what loving and being loved mean and also tells that life is never the same again.

This story was filmed by a famous actor, Clint Eastwood, and I watched it also, but the book is much better than the movie for me as always.

The Bridge of Madison County from the movie

Robert Kincaid, who had a free spirit searching for the covered bridges of Madison County, was the photographer for National Geographic. Francesca Johnson was the farm wife waiting for the fulfillment of a girlhood dream. The four-day love story between Robert, a 52 year-old divorced man, and Francesca, a 45 year-old lady who had two children and a husband began to see each other on one hot summer day in 1965.

Robert Kincaid walked into the quaint Iowa town of Winterset to photograph its beautiful old bridges for a photo essay. Asking directions at a local farmhouse, he met Francesca whose family was away at the Iowa State Fair for four days. Robert had a wonderful time with Francesca. They were charmed by one another's beauty and the magic that they brought each other. They truely fell in love with each other.

When it came time for him to leave, Robert wanted her to go with him. It was a hard decision for her, and finally she said no because she couldn't leave her family. After Robert had gone, Francesca never talked of him again to anyone for 30 years. After Robert died, his ashes were scattered near the Roseman Bridge where they took the picture together long time ago. She got a box with his personal effects. In the box, there were camera equipment, a chane with a medallion with her name inscribed, and a photography book; a published collection of black and white photos by him entitled "FOUR DAYS." It was a beautiful, dramatic black and white represetation of love and passion, loneliness and pain, and union. On the front page, there read an inscription "FOR F."

After Francesca died, her ashes were spread over the same place where Robert's had been. She left some goods for her son and daughter. Those were three leather bound notebooks which contained her story of their love and a sealed envelop with "Carolyn or Michael" written on it. She told her children about Robert, her biggest and everlasting love.

Four days changed forever the lives of two lonely people. Before Robert, a roving photographer, intervened in Francesca's life, she used to be a common housewife. Her husband was a very good provider and truely loved his family. Francesca and her husband did care deeply for each other and raised their children without any shortage. But her marriage suffered from lack of romance. She always felt loneliness and emptiness that wasn't understood by her husband even if she seemed to live a comfortable life. At that time, Robert appeared in front of her, and they began to want each other and long for each other. They couldn't stop the powerful romance. Ultimately, she was left with her family after Robert left, but their need for each other lasted their lifetime.

When she went to groceries in the middle of Main Street in front of the whole town with her husband, she saw Robert leaving town in his pick up. She knew it was the last time she could see him. I couldn't bear with the sorrow welling up within my heart when I read the part that Francesca saw Robert's disappearing car in the back mirror of her truck and sobbed without being noticed by her husband. I was unable to keep back tears and wept freely.

How many times  do we encounter throughout our lifetimes? Unfortunately, nobody knows when love comes to us. Of course, whenever we fall in love with someone, we consider it as the last love. When we feel our love is leaving from us, we suffer pains as if the world would come to an end. But we'd better know the truth that another love will sneak in our heart when a love is over.

I remember one about LOVE of many proverbs in Korea. "The completion of love is the parting." You cannot realize your spose must be your true and last love because he or she is always beside you. Francesca might love both of her husband and Robert with different colored feeling. Anyway Francesca chose the love accompanied by responsibility, and she just believed that her love with Robert was the true and everlasting love.

I like Byron's beautiful poem quoted in this book.

There is a pleasure in the pathless woods...
There is a rapture on the lonely shore...
There is society where none intrude...
By the deep sea and music in its roar...
I love not man the less, but Nature more...
From these our interviews, in which I steal...
From all I may be, or have been before...
To mingle with the universe and feel...
What I can ne'er express, yet cannot all conceal.

Be careful!
Suddenly another love has come into your heart already even you don't realize it.  (2002)

THE SONG OF LONG BEACH

I have been in Long Beach for just one year since I immigrated to U.S. in 2001. The sea is just 10- minute drive away from my place. It is fascinating that I can go to the ocean at any time if I want to. Actually Seoul in Korea where I had lived is very far from the ocean. Accordingly, people need much patience of about 4-hour trip, sometimes over 10 hours during the summer vacation season due to heavy traffic jam, to go and see the ocean. There is a Pacific Ocean in Long Beach. I am living in Long Beach. I can go and see the ocean anytime. How terrific!

I like the Downtown area of Long Beach. That place lools very exotic for me as a foreigner. I always feel some vitality in there. Extremely great variety of people on the street, many kinds of car, the open-air restaurants, tall palm trees on the roadside, the pleasant breeze from the ocean when I drive on Ocean Boulevard, the colorful Shoreline village, Convention Center and the historic Queen Mary...  The nonprofit Aquarium of the Pacific is located in Downtown Long Beach. It's a major attraction visited  by tens of millions of people since its opening. The visitors can experience all from a deep sea adventure at the Aquarium of the Pacific right on the bay. Especially I love the thick fog in the early morning. I often find myself trying to smell the fog when I stand in it.

It is highly regrettable that some dirty areas by some people who seem to lack the sense of public morality. Also some gangsters make long Beach very dangerous and violent. They make the horrific accident such as gunfight. Grocery shopping for Korean food is another thing that makes me inconvenient. Korean Market is a little bit far from Long Beach, so every weekend I need to go to Garden Grove City 30 minutes away by car.

People say that Long Beach is one giant playground located right in the heart of Southern California. Also they say that Long Beach used to be very luxurious city long time ago. These dyas the mommoth-sized shopping mall opend in Downtown. It's very good news for the people who love Long Beach. Long Beach gets out of the bed, stretching her arms and yawning. And she is quickening her steps for regaining her past glory. Good luck! (2002)

TRIP TO EL DORADO PARK

El Dorado Park in Long Beach

People usually recharge their energy that they are consumed by the hurried life of today through taking trip. I do so , too. Befor I was married, I had many chances to take a trip. I used to enjoy the beautiful view of mountains, rivers, valleys, and so on... For the over ten years since I got married, I couldn't dream even a dream to take a trip because I had  two children and mountainous house chores to take care of. My life without any trips was so monotonous and tiresome. At last I god a chance to take a trip to El Dorado Park in Long Beach with classmates of Adult School a few days ago. What a nice and precious chance! That trip already became one of my favorite trips even if I didn't do yet.

These days I get my own free time to go out by myself because my children are more grown up and independent. I can take the VESL class and conversation class at Long Beach Adult School for self-improvement. Recently I created the group named "Friday Fun Club" with the students in both VESL class and conversation class by the help of the teachers. Any students of the school could be a member of this club if he wants to be. We meet on the last Friday a month when we don't have any class. We decide to visit some nice places in City of Long Beach such as parks, museums, libraries and other social organizations in order to strengthen our friendship and improve our English skills once a month. When I suggested this plan of our club to the students, they looked very excited Our members are already 26 persons.

The first meeting of Friday Fun Club was on March 28, 2003. It was very successful. Surely all members had a wonderful and memorable time. We gathered in the school classroom at 9:00 a.m. before our departure. To my regret, just 11 members participated in the first meeting because many members were working at that time. Before leaving for the park, we voted the first president of FF Club and I was elected. That title for me was too much. It made me uncomfortable, but all of our members encouraged me. At first, we made a plan for our future activities and made some rules for our club. Finally we departed for the El Dorado Park, the first trip destination of FF Club, nearby the school.

We arrived there safely. It took about one hour to find some members who already came right there without stopping at the school. Nevertheless, we were off to a nice start. The color green of the spring was there in the park. Clear and light weather, crisp wind, a large number of ducks and swans swimming on the pond, brave squirrels approaching and staring us... Everything was wonderful.

We shared our lunch. Every food that each member brought was delicious. After enjoyng lunch, we tooa a walk around the peaceful pond. We chattered away happily as we walked. We sang a song of each country with translation into English by turns. I am sure that was a exciting experience for each member because we can learn English at the same time as singing.

Around at 1:00 p.m., we had to break up our first trip in expectation of next meeting because some members had to go to the work and some had to go sleep after the hard work through the previous night. On the way home, I felt deeply moved by all members' nice behavior and faithfulness to their everyday lives.

I think our first trip would be my favorit trip even the meeting place was not luxury or famous but simple and trivial to others because all of great and dear club members were there with me. I hope my favorite trip will be stacked into neat piles with our Friday Fun Club's activities. (2003)

BAGGY PANTS - The dangerous Stereotype

While we are living on the earth with other people, we may made many mistakes owing to our wrong stereotypes. Above all, we have a tendency to judge other people by their appearances. How many victims of stereotyping have happened? What about their disadvantages by our stereotyping? We shouldn't overlook those issues at all.

Recently I see so many young people who enjoy wearing baggy pants, ridiculous big shirts and big shoes. When i came to America last year, I saw one man who wore this kind of pants in the street. When I saw his underwear that was exposed above his pants, i got shocked and thought he might be a sadist. But now I understand that it is very popular with young people. In fact, when i see their pants I am worried about them being taken off, so I feel it's thrill. Fortunately, my son has never tried on these type of pants which I hate.

One of my friens has a 14 year-old son who likes wearing baggy pants even if he is a good student in his school. His mother, my friend, often tell him.
"Please take your damn pants off. Your pants look like they have dung inside. Please, please!"
But he ignores his mother's pleading by grinning. When I asked him one day how to wear those pants, he answered.
"It's easy for us. Do you want to know?"
He showed me without hesitation how to fasten his belt so that his pants cannot slip down.
   "It's inconvenient, isn't it?"
When I asked him, he answered very clearly and concisely.
   "Never!"

Actually we had ever been crazy about trivial things, which weren't understood by older generation. In early 1970s, women's mini-skirts and men's long hair were sweeping Korea. At that time we kept the Confucian culture strongly, so that culture among young people couldn't be appoved morally. From that time on, the game of hide and seek between policemen, who wanted to control them, and young people, who wanted to enjoy the vogue, was begun. The policemen always kept the rulers and to mesure the length of skirt or hair when they met young people in the street. At that time our parents used to ask us with the same words as ours, in these days.

Probably some people say that we must understand young people and their own culture because we had enjoyed our own culture long time ago. Therefore we should give a big hug, both to our children and their culture. We are responsible for understanding them. We should pay attention to their inside instead of their appearance. We should be free ourselves from our stereotypes which has stayed for a long time in our minds.

When we begin to nag at them, probably they might say to us just like as follows:
"Don't look at us so coldly. We already know how your young days were. Do you forget your mini-
skirt, mom? Don't you remember your long hair, dady?"

Now we don't have any freedom to raise and educate our children with our own sweet will. Actually our children are often much wiser than we, their parents. (2002)

PUPPY LOVE - My Case

People say that three kinds of love are there in human's world.
One is platonic love, another is erotic love and the other is agape. Most of people experience one of them through their lives. Especially erotic love, which is the love between man and woman, controls many people's emotion even their whole lives.

Once Cupid's arrow hits someone's heart, he begins to suffer from a fever which is named "LOVE." One day Cupid, the Roman God of Love, aimed and shot arrows at the middle of my heart. It hit the target right and made me fall in love. Looking back on it now, I am not sure whether it can be named LOVE or not, but it made me suffer at least at that moment. Okay, I'll call it "MY PUPPY LOVE" anyway. When I think about it, I smile at myself bitterly because of my stupid behavior and thoughtless adherence to him. But sometimes it gives me some energy in my busy and monotonous everyday life. Frankly, it was my one-sided love.

At that time, I was supposed to quit study after finishing high school due to terribly tough economic situation of my family. I got a job as a banker on the recommendation of the principal of my high school. That situation made me frustrated and lose my all hopes of life. When I met some college student by accident on the street, my frustration had reached fever pitch. Every time it happened, my desire to enter the college was getting bigger and bigger. Keeping money counting and arrogant bank custommers made me much more tired.

Hardly a day went by without my thinking of him. I used feel like wandering in a maze. Listening to music in the cafe was the only thing that I enjoyed. The music that I liked covered a wide variety of genres, from Korean popular music to Western music and from classical music to Latin music. A lot of cafes hired disc jockeys and let them serve to customers every kind of music then. We could request music that we want to listen to disc jockey. I used to sit on the corner of cafe and stay until the cafe finished business hour. I was ehghteen.

He was nineteen. he was my coworker. He was very tall and skinny. His black horn-rimmed glasses, which I liked, made him look intelligent. In fact, he was smart, very cheerful, out-going, aggressive, helpful. caring, thoughtful and kind. he deserved the highest praise for his personality. He had positive attitude. He looked a kind of perfect person for me.  I was really interested in his character that totally different from mine.

He seemed to get along with his coworkers and supervisors when I was struggling with the relationship with them. He was willing to help someone that asked his help at any time. All of his colleagues trusted his abilities and sincerity because he was a good helper and problem solver. Due to family difficulties he graduated from commercial high school which offered vocational education to students.  On the contrary, I was not good at handling my tasks with numbers or money in the bank because I  used to study to enter the university. Actually I was down in the depth of despair at that time because I couldn't give up entering university. Sometimes his successful working life aroused jealousy.

He seemed to like reading books, listening to music, watching movies, climbing mountains, societies and meetings. But sometimes his many-sided learning made him somewhat a frivolous person. Besides, he looked a snob  due to his shallow understanding of all fields on some occasions. Anyway, I began to love him no matter what, and recreated him into a perfect person of my free own will. He became my idol and hope and oasis in spite of his many weakenesses. He used to treat me as his younger sister, so I made an efforts to show him my special feelings. On the one hand I wanted to get his concerns and love, but on the other, I was afraid that my one-sided love would come true. That was ironic. Surely that's why I call it "PUPPY LOVE." He was called Kim.

On a freezing winter day, he and I were taking a walk an the Downtown Street. Both of us pull in our heads because of a cutting cold wind. Our cheeks and mouths were so almost frozen that we couldn't  speak. Suddenly he brought up the subject of his feelings about me. He told me earnestly and strongly that he didn't have any special feeling as lovers about me. He said,
"Please don't like me. Your feelings about me, which you beleive that's love, is not a real love. You are just confused into thinking that you love me. I m not the right person who is in your imagination. I like you but I don't love you. I understand you because I have same experience as yours." At thatmoment, I heard the piano music from the record shop. I still remember vividly what title that music was. That was "The Ballard for Adeline." by popular pianist Richard Clayderman. After letting him go, I walked from Downtown to my house as shedding endless tears for about 3 hours. I was ashamed of my wrong love.

Several days later, I got a long letter from him. He apologized his impoliteness to me. He also consoled me in my sadness. It was not long before I knew he was rejected his love from my another coworker who was very closed to me and used to hang out. Stupidly I often asked her advice about my first love. It was too cruel for me to explain how difficult and sad those days were.

I quit  my job of three years in the bank at last and became a university student after months of hard study. One day, I visited his work place with putting a badge of my university on my left chest. He congratulated on my entering university.

When I erased him from my mind completely and greeted another love, five years had already passed.

He is still working in the bank. Of course he got married another woman. My friend, who is still working in the same bank with him, told me that he often asked her about my recent life. (2002)

WHEN I FEEL STRESSFUL...

Honestly I usually feel 'stress out' every morning and every afternoon.
In the morning, my son always makes me feel stressful because he never hurries even though the time to attend school is pressing. Both of two children make me feel the same way when they come back home from the school in the afternoon. My son is in the 7th grade and daughter in in the 4th grade now. On coming home from the school, the argument between us is just begun. They often consider me as a walking dictionary, so they always ask me everything as keeping supplied with their homework under my nose. In fact, my family immigrated just a few months ago. Surely most of immigrant families run into troubles as my family does. Probably this problem will go on till my children fluently handle English. Actually I need a time to think it over and figure it out because I don't have English skill enough to give them satisfaction either. I am a beginner as an immigrant just like them! Finally I cannot bear the stress and yell out to them.
"Later, later! Don't you see me wash the dishes?"
The struggle with their homework continues until midnight. After finishing that, I have a splitting headache. But I never free from that pain because I am treated as a walking dictionary by them. All that I can do is just waithing for the time when they are grown up and grasp my real abilities.

In these days my homesickness becomes my heaviest stress. It drives me into uncontrollable confusion. Everything is gettimg mixed up and finally I drop my tears. Once I begin to cry, I can't keep back my tears. Sometimes looking myself crying in the mirror helps me controll my feeling. How funny crying appearance in the mirror is!

To relieve my stress, I usually listen to music, write a letter to my friends, call and chat with them, or work on computer.  But the best way to handle my stress or sad feeling is letting myself sink to the bottom of sadness. Ironically excessive sadness or stress ends in a dim hope. Nevertheless, I am not a masochist. I am a truely ordinary person and perfectly normal woman. (2002)

ALL ABOUT HER

She likes to listen carefully when people talk more than talk with people.
When she listen to people, she always asks and answers to herself in her heart.
"No, that's not it. You are wrong."
"Yes, that's true. You are right."
She is quite willing to give an advice to her neighbors who need to be comforted. She has a knack of making people feel at home, setting their minds in order and finding their way soon.

She prefers the sky in which gray clouds hang low to the birght one with sun. She is actually a kind of person who is troubled with a dark side of life. When she passes through the inner-city area near her house, she gives a wink to shabby looking-kids who have though and skinny faces, clear and melancholy eyes. She can easily figure out their parents' earnest wishes to hand over the decent lives to their children. A number of thoughts of her young days crroses her mind whenever she thinks about it.

She is so sensitive that she cannot control herself sometimes. So whenever she feels it, she finds herself enjoying a chaotic situation. Sometimes she goes to farmer's market to see many merchants' healthy smiles, shouting, and and more or less wicked commercial spirits even if she has nothing to buy. She likes it. She can meet vigorous and highly motivated people there. On the way home from market, she realizes her shopping basket filled with healthy will for life instead of something like food.

She likes raining. Whenever rain begins to sprinkle, she goes out and wanders aimlessly around the street with umbrella. She enjoys the music that the patter of rain on the umbrella makes. When her feet hurt after walking in the rain for a while, she droppps into cafe and sips hot coffee as sitting by the wide glass window and enjoying rainy street. If the old familiar tunes of saxophone that makes her feel melancholy comes to her ears right at the moment, she becomes the happiest woman in the world.

Recently she got another thing that makes her happy. That's sea. The wide and unlimited sea always embraces her without any questions when she comes in a disgruntled or forlon mood. She can hear the voice of sea. The sea always talks in whispers in her ear, "Please be generous! Please think over much more about giving love than receiving. Open your hear with sympathy for the sorrow and suffer."  While seeing waves rushing upon the sands with grinning her white teeth, she manages to control her wrath no matter what. After then she realize that she has been so busy in feeling sorry for herself and she forgot how much she has to be grateful for. She begins to think about poor and lonely people who stay awake even in the midnight in fear obstacles in their lives.

She likes white chrysanthemums, black color, mist in the early morning, late autumn, French movies, black and moist nose of dog, baby's mouth which seems like dropping spit right now, calm surface of lake, brownish bread, bluish moonlight, a dead pronunciation of Germany, the time when evening sun cast long shadows, Rachmaninoff, Herman Hesse, Vincent Van Gobh, Bee Gees, Tom Hanks, etc.....

Apparently she is living a comfortable and problem-free life. Her husband is a very sincere person. He is a hard-working person. He does his best to provide plentiful and abundant life to his family. Her two children are brilliant. Her daughter and son both are outstanding students in their classes. They also have many talents for painting, playing musical instruments, origami, and writing, etc... She perseveres in her efforts to be a good wife and wise mother. However she cannot help feeling a sense of emptiness in her heart. She often dreams of breaking away from the routine of her daily life.

She is responsible for the care of family members and a mountain of house chores. The accountability for making a comfortable atmosphere around her house is hers.  She has a heap of things to do everyday. She thinks she is just going through the motions. Sometimes she is sick and tired of her monotonous and tedious life.

When she realizes she cannot remember someone's name that she loved long time ago, she gets sunk in the depth of despair. How much heartbroken she felt when she parted from him! She shouldn't let his name fade out of her memory. She is impatient about her all dreams thinning in the distance. She is angry with her quiet and unexciting life. She has pity on herself.

He, who is called "someone" by her, is the one that understood her better than any others. He used to notice her complex emotion and ideas. When she once excliamed with delight seeing it began to rain, he just smiled with a serene smile of his. He quickly noticed whenever she went through ups and downs due to her delicate feelings. When she looked exhausted physically and mentally, she could take comfort enough from his concerned look. She still remember that he stared at her with his eyes full of a flaming sunset when the blue sky just began to turn a rosy sky. Needless to say she already knew his solitude even his sufferings behind his kindness and smile. it was the same with him. She got a view of the world with maturity of early forties from him even if she was in twenties. He was the type of person who always plunged into his own work with enthusiasm. He couldn't stand people who compromise with injustice. He often drowned his wrath and loneliness in drunk. He became talkative a little and criticized the way of world while he was drinking. He laughed at himself as well as made a fool of himself. Sometimes he seemed to defend himself with his erudition and profound knowledge lest his weaknesses should be exposed. After drinking party, he said good-bye to other drinking companions with his shoulders drooping. He looked solitary because people didn't understand him. But some people, who knew him well, grasped his hidden sensibilities and feebleness at the bottom of his heart.

When she said to him about her plan to get marry as feeling a surge of sorrow coming over her, she saw him listening what she said with a quiet smile. She knew he cloaked his grief with a smile. He was such a person just like that. Actually she didn't expect his special response.

At last she left him and got married. Frankly speaking she already knew someday she would be left alone even if she wanted to stay with him, so she did it prior to him. Even after all these years he still  appear in her dream like nightmare. He always stood in the snowing field and kept watch her in silence without catching. Sometimes we find a faded colored petal while we are turning over the leaves of a dusty book from the bookshelf. We come across into our mind some memories while we are looking for the petal's past smell and beaty, the past day's prosperity. Yes! Now he is a being for her as if a faded colored petal. He always reminds her of past young days. Sometimes beautifully... sometimes brokenheartedly...

At last it is the time to lay the past to rest. She knows it well too much. Hugging her old memoried to her chest, she has to release her hurt and her anger and her grief. In these days she thinks more about giving than receiving love. She has a lot of responsibilities for her family. She has her own family that she must love. Sometimes her rights are nothing in the presence of her family's. The title of housewife or mother compels her to give up her dreams. Too many times have passed since she didn't act for herself entirely. She often has a fever and chills. She suffers from a migraine, too. At that time she usually takes an anodyne.

She doesn't want her children to be latchkey kids. Occasionally she finds herself who seeks after her aim in life from her children. She has tied her children to her own desire and hopes. But she knows that it is temporary. Her children will be grown up soon and they want to be free from their mother's concern. When that moment comes, she is supposed to let them go and make their own choices. She wonders what she will feel when they yearn for their own freedom.
"Am I willing to release them without awakening feelings of regret?"
Evidently not. But the time to feel like that surely comes. Night after night she cannot get to sleep for a long while. She tosses and turns in the bed.

She knows she wants to have a bigger one no matter what and often becomes nervous to this time. To lift out of the dark morass of confusion, she closes her eyes and listens the voices from her heart, and she can collect her scattered mind. She makes efforts to throw out her heavy dreams filled with greedy and adherence into the water. But she still dreams of a certain something  in her heart of hearts very often.  (2002)

IF I CHANGED MYSELF...

Sometimes I want to live my remaining years as a totally different person from myself until now. at that moment I am quite disgusted with myself, especially my mental structure. Actually I am not a masochist. I usually love myself and try to live in my own way. I think every person imagines himself, who is completely changed, once at least. This time I want to think about it and analyze myself.

I have so many defects in my character. Above all, I am too emotional. Eapecially I have too much tears to keep back in my eyes. I spill my tears anywhere or anytime for no particular reason. Once I think about sad things, I feel rolling my tears down already. That's irresistable.
I am a very indecisive person, too. Even if I have to start over doing something, I always think over and over until I am driven into the corner that I should make a decision. I am eager to be a active person.
I am called a good-natured person by people who know me, but I want to hear I am a cold and indifferent person. Really....
I am too prudent and cautious to progressive. I am busy in looking back upon my past. I am afraid of being exposed to a new place or new environment. It takes a long time until I become accustomed to the new things.
I don't have positive attitudes. I would rather looking on the dark side of life than the bright side of it. I would rather enjoying thinking about the frailty of life than the pleasures of it. I often compare the life to the thorny path. Life always comes to me with heavy weight. Life is usually compared to  a journey or a voyage. Yes. Life is so hard and tough for me just like a long journey in the desert or a voyage over the endless sea. Somebody says, "Life is like an onion: you peel off layer after layer and then you find there is nothing."

Mostly people are likely to be blind to their own defects, but I know my defects well. I am often eager to change myself and enjoy imagining totally different myself. If I changed myself, how wonderful it would be! But it's impossible because my all defects are just I. Maybe it's good to shoot for the moon sometimes.  (2002)

AFTER READING "THE TRIMMED LAMP" by O.Henry

The “trimmed lamp” spoken of this story would have been an oil or kerosene lantern. Along with gaslights, these were in wide use before the days when electric lights were common. The wick (the piece of cloth that burns to make light) of the lantern had to be pulled up often, and neatly trimmed, so that the light would go on burning brightly.
In this story, there are two main characters, Nancy and Lou. They had much in common, but they also differed in some ways. Both women shared the same goal of marrying a rich man. In today’s world, women like Nancy and Lou would be able to make a good living on their own, but in O. Henry’s time, with few good jobs opened to women, their only chance of success to high social position was to marry well.

Lou was ambitious, so she seemed to get to her goal, getting married to a rich man. Although Nancy was more intelligent, elegant, and conservative than Lou, she was to marry Dan, who wasn’t rich. Which of the two had found true happiness? Lou? No, she didn’t. Judging from tears dropped fro her eyes when she met Nancy, she was not happy undoubtedly. Nancy, who was learning the manners of the rich people steadily through her experiences, seemed to find her true happiness at last. While Lou was following the unreal image of riches, Nancy was keeping her lamp trimmed, adjusted so it would keep burning, in her heart.

I think Lou did her best to attain her object, riches. Nancy did, too. But compared with Nancy, Lou failed to grasp both bright and seamy sides of riches. Lou seemed to think ‘Money’ was the only one way to happiness. Nancy, who chose ‘True Love’, may have much trouble during her life because of money. But I believe she and her husband can conquest these sufferings with the strong power of love. When I was young, I thought ‘Love’ was the most important thing through my life. I don’t want to revise my thinking until now. Frankly speaking, sometimes I think how happy I would be if I were rich. I want to be richer than now and enjoy life to the full. I want to go to everywhere, buy all things I like, and experience all opportunities that approach to me without any economical troubles. But I know the sense of emptiness when I attain all things. The process to get something is more beautiful and precious than the result, isn’t it?

If I had lived those two women’s day, I would have chosen the Nancy’s way. I want to believe the power of love. I don’t want to have riches without desire and hope to accomplish dreams someday. I want to be a last romanticist of this age. Of course, it is difficult for me not to lose this thinking while I am living in this period of materialism. But I will make an effort and I think other persons will have to do so. We all must remember this simple and eternal truth.
Anyway both women had learned about and realized the nature of true happiness.
We, who had read this story, have to do so. In my opinion, we have to choose substance over appearance. We, the wise, will try to pull up the wick of our hope’s lanterns and neatly trim them, and be able to accomplish our goals. (2002)

THE COMPARISON BETWEEN KOREAN & THE US' CULTURAL VALUES

Value means the importance or usefulness of something such as a quality, attitude, or method.. If you place a particular value on something, that is the importance or usefulness you think it has. If you value something or someone, you think that they are important and you appreciate them. The word .value. is found in the practical, useful, and important aspects. On the other hand, the word .worth. is found in the intellectual, mental, and moral aspects.

Each one has different idea about value, but usually people follow the current idea except the people who have distinct ego and view of life. Since I came to the United States and have been living for 2 years, I found a lot of differences between Korean cultural values and those of the U.S.

In Korea, most of people value the politeness to elder persons caused by Confucianism. Also, family egoism overflows in my country. Many parents value the success of their kids in the future, so they don't mind other's problems caused by their family egoism. They usually think about "ONLY ME, MY KIDS," and "MY FAMILY."
Most of parents lead their children, even already grown up children, and they want to control their children.s future very often. They take care of their children generously and lavishly. They have a lot of patience for their children.s success, so they want to give the high education to their kids in face of all difficulties. Consequently, their kids depend on them too much for a long time. Also, most parents get rewarded psychology from their kids unconsciously. The oldest son's family responsibility is very important after his parents become old, so the oldest son feels burdensome from his parents. In the U.S., I like their cultural values to keep the public order senses. For example, they never complain about that even if they are supposed to keep line so long time. Most parents show their children, without hurry, which way is right. They also give the right of choice between wrong one and right one to their children. After American kids become adults, they live independently. The rich people return their wealth to others after they retired.
Many people work at many places as volunteers. They also have egoism, but it is different from that of my country. Their egoism never hurt and injure others. I rarely find the family egoism without consideration about others. situations from them. Of course, I don't see all of Americans and I don.t have enough experiences in this country.

Other's eyes are very important for Korean people. They can't ignore them and are usually sensible of other's eyes more than themselves' satisfaction. It has a big diffrence from American cultural values. American people seem to live in their own way without conscious of other's eyes. They enjoy living rationally and practically. They don't care other's eyes as long as they live within the legal limit. I haven't followed the fashion of the day or the vogue since I lived in America.

Korean people are very smart enough to take a short way for success. People say that people can't live in Korea with just honesty and sincerity, so usually shrewd opportunists succeed in their lives. It is very shameful phenomenon. However American society never cheats people who are honest and hardworking and sincere, so they are guaranteed their comfortable future. I am not sure whether it's ture or not. Truely the population of Korea is so big comparing the size of land, so the competition should be tough unavoidably and sometimes place their value at the wrong side. That's it.

I really don't want to adjust to the current of these days in Korea because many young people including some high-class people are crazy about the Western culture. After Korean War, we have just 50 years so far, but our culture developed too much during this short time. Consequently, cultural lag showed up. Korean people didn't accept both of the civilization and culture, so they suffer from a mental disorder. Sometimes I am ashamed of my fellow country members' arrogant behaviors. From the outside of my country since I've been living here, I can see their wrong behaviors. I feel a sense of betrayal and hut my patriotism when I see undesirable things from them.

I really love my native country, Korea where my all lovers are living. Also I have the strong Korean spirit in my heart. Korea in my heart is the best country just like paradise without crimes, jeolousy, competition, family egoism, arrogance, and argument. I am dreaming Korea like in that way.  (2002)
